All mushrooms contain chemicals that have medicinal qualities - mainly polysaccarides. These have anti-tumor and immunostimulating properties. So if you are eating mushrooms, you are getting benefits. Of course, some have been proven to have stronger effects and if you are hoping to boost your immune response, it would be well to go with these specific species. I mentioned two, but more have been added to the list in the last few years and commercial preparations (capsules) containing great combinations are available at health food stores. You can buy dried shitake mushrooms (even at places like Costco) and these are great to have on hand to reconstuct in soups and even in water to saute or to add to other dishes. Here in Oregon we have access to mushroom growers so I buy fresh miatake, shitake and oyster mushrooms. I preserve them by sauteing them briefly in butter, cooling them and putting them in serving-size bags in the freezer. They freeze well and I have a constant supply. Works great! Combining mushrooms with seaweed in miso soup is wonderful for boosting the immune system, too.

When you say "include mushrooms in your diet 3 or 4 times a week", do you mean the shitake or maitake mushrooms, or will any kind of mushroom do?

Hi again. About the cooling off shower, I also wanted to tell you that the real advantage to that (besides the stimulation of nerves and circulation) is that the cool water immediately restores the body's pH levels back to normal. When the body gets hot it becomes more acidic. It will naturally balance out in time, but this does it quickly, which is less stressful to the body.

The medical establishment has never been in to preventative medicine, so it is not too surprising. You would think they would jump at a safe alternative to aspertame. I tried to find out for sure whether or not it has been approved as a food additive. I think not, but didn't find definitive info. If anyone knows for sure, please comment.

Good for you for trying! Once you get used to cooling off, you won't be able to get out w/o doing it - even if you have a cold or in the dead of winter. "Course, I'm the 'cold-water queen'!
Remembering to deep breathe is definitely harder. I do it when getting in and out of bed, when I walk up the hill, and the rest is hit and miss. Thanks for commenting.

I'm trying to remember to end my showers with cold water. I always feel so much better when I do that, but it's not a habit for me yet, so I forget pretty often {{{sigh}}}. I'm also trying to remember to do some deep breathing every day. I think I need to put up sticky notes on my mirror or something (guess I need a waterproof one for the shower! I could put it in a baggie and hang it up, I suppose).

I just think it's unbelievable how the government and the media talk so much about the obesity problems in this country, but then can't seem to get around to approving Stevia as a food additive to replace sugar! It's just ridiculous. I hope they get that together soon - glad the soda companies are finally allowed to do it. Maybe that will open the way for others and FDA approval.
