Giving tired or irritated eyes a bath is a wonderful experience. A glass or plastic eye cup (still sold in drug stores) can be used, but a basin filled with water will also work.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy is basically treating the body by using water.

It is much more diverse than just jumping into a hot tub. In its broadest sense, drinking water could be considered ‘hydrotherapy’. You have used hydrotherapy when you iced a sprain or put a tea bag on a burn.

Healing with hydrotherapy is economical, accessible, risk-free and effective. The therapy utilizes the temperature of water in effecting both the blood and lymph flow throughout the body. (Remember that keeping the body fluids flowing is crucial to health.) In changing the flow of these fluids, we can effect changes in all tissues through cleansing and nourishment.

Why Herbal Remedies?

With so many commercial healing products available, why would we go to the trouble of growing or buying herbs? Here are a few important reasons why I think it is good to become knowledgeable in the use of herbs.

The ideal treatment program for our health concerns is one that assists the body in its own healing process. Our bodies are designed to heal themselves, contrary to the belief that only doctors and drugs can effect healing. We can use natural, God-given plant and food remedies to help the body do its job of bringing the body back to a healthy, functional state.

Natural food supplements are foods (or food by-products) that provide health benefits. These foods are high in nutrients and most of them aid digestion which in turn promotes good health.

A few years ago I did extensive research on this topic since eating super-nutrient foods sounded like a better option than purchasing manufactured supplements. Vitamin B12 was the main nutrient for which I was unable to find a substitute in a natural source. Brewer’s yeast does contain some, but only in small quantities.

Special Considerations for Children and Pregnant women

Pregnancy

Most often, Raspberry leaf is the only herb recommended during the first trimester.

Safe herbs for the second and third trimester are Elder flowers, Lemon Balm, Echinacea, Fennel seed, Linden flowers, Nettles and Red Raspberry leaf.

A tea is the best preparation, although capsules or tinctures could also be taken.

Sweeten the tea with honey, Elderberry syrup or Stevia if desired.

Caution: do not use Licorice root or Peppermint leaf.

Drink 2-3 cups per day.
